Things to Do in Chile
Want to know some of the standout things to do in Chile? Then have a look through our handpicked suggestions below...
1. San Pedro de Atacama
Sitting at an altitude of 2,400 meters and offering stunning views of the Atacama Desert, the town of San Pedro de Atacama is a dizzying attraction. The pink flamingos of Chaxas Lagoon are a familiar sight, while the rather scarily-named Valle de la Muerte (Death Valley) gives new meaning to the word 'deserted'.
2. Chungara Lake
One of the highest lakes in the world, Chungara sits beneath the imposing Parinacota and Pomerape volcanoes.
3. Plaza de la Independencia, Concepcion
The central square in Concepcion has a fairly self-explanatory name: Chilean independence from Spain was declared here for the first time, on January 1 1818.
The stunning region stretches across Argentina and Chile and is so-named because of surviving accounts of its exploration by Magellan whose counterparts reported seeing a race of giant people, some as tall as 15 feet. 'Patagon' has been held to signify 'Land of the Bigfeet'.
5. Easter Island
Home to the unmistakeable stone statues known as 'moai', Easter Island (or Rapa Nui, to give it its Polynesian name) is one of the most mysterious UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Some 887 of the iconic sculptures have been discovered on the island, with 50 - almost exclusively carved out of hardened volcanic ash - still standing.
