Want to know some of the standout things to do in Santiago de Chile? Then have a look through our handpicked suggestions below...
1. Explore the Plaza de Armas
The Plaza is Santiago’s focal point. Government buildings sit alongside an ornate Cathedral, whilst the people busy themselves with all manner of activities in the square. Festivals occur here, as do markets and even bullfights. So, whenever you go, there’s sure to be something to keep you interested for longer than you might expect.
2. Destination Downtown
Santiago’s downtown spreads out from the Plaza de Armas. Stroll the streets, or head towards the Palacio de la Moneda. Alternatively, find the Museo Chileno de Arte Precolumbino, which aims to represent pre-Columbian peoples through their art.
3.The Mercado Central
Santiago’s market is no ordinary affair. Its immense variety of produce (fruit, vegetables, meat and fish) bring amazing color to an otherwise rather ominous iron structure. Try the seafood and, in particular, the shark, which is some of the best on offer anywhere in the world.
4. Mount the Cerro San Cristóbal
Take a funicular ride up the Cerro San Cristóbal. A massive white statue of the Virgin Mary awaits, along with awe-inspiring views of Santiago and beyond. There are also two swimming pools perfect for cooling off during the summer months.
5. Beach in the Morning – Slopes in the Afternoon!
Santiago is situated perfectly for a day trip or two during your stay. Gorgeous beaches are an hour and a half away. Or, if skiing is your thing, the nearby Andes offer perfect snow.
