Toronto Nightlife: Places and Districts to Go Out in Toronto

Toronto at Dusk

A night out in Toronto is characterized by two things that will come as music to travelers' ears: choice and diversity. Right across its various different neighborhoods, there’s a full spectrum of styles and, most importantly, prices.

In keeping with its bohemian past, Queen St West is the heart of the city's ‘Clubland’ and some of the liveliest nightlife in Toronto. Bars and clubs are particularly plentiful at the west end of this long street, into West Queen W and Bellwoods Park where it grows gradually more alternative.

Nearby Richmond St (which runs parallel) and, a little to the south, Adelaide St are also heaving with venues. With a couple of clubs, Peter St (which runs between the two and down towards King St West) completes the picture.

Cutting-edge dance music may be a little thin on the ground, but Toronto does have its fair share of good spots for gigs and live music. Jazz clubs feature particularly highly (culminating with an excellent Jazz Festival in late June).

To the north of the Downtown Area, College Street (which runs from the university of Toronto to Little Italy) is also a vibrant part of town, with a large number of restaurants, bars and clubs catering to a largely studenty crowd.

Uptown is also home to the Gay Village. Based around Wellesley and Church Streets, the area (which really does have a pronounced village feel) is a remarkably welcoming, lively quarter full of bars and cafés.

While the line between bar, café and restaurant may be a little hazy, there are plenty of chic places to go for an early evening drink in the Beaches (to the east) and (Uptown) on Bloor St in Yorkville. Prices, however, tend to be a little higher than elsewhere in the city.

A real highlight of a trip to Toronto, though, can be when it coincides with a Blue Jays baseball or a Maple Leafs hockey game. Live tickets can be expensive, but the games are on everywhere in the city and the atmosphere has to be experienced to be believed.
