'Beaver tail' is arguably the dish most associated with the city but, far from being a slice of the furry animal, this snack actually consists of dough with a variety of toppings such as sugar and cinnamon.
And Ottawa is, in general, quite the place for food on the go. In addition to this enticing traditional snack, there are a number of shawarma eateries at the Byward Market which serve delicious - and cheap - kebabs. This is also the best spot to find another local specialty, 'poutine' - chips, gravy and cheese!
Cosmopolitan Ottawa is also a great place for eating out, even for travelers on a budget, thanks to the large number of affordable international restaurants available. Chinatown (around Sommerset Street) is the place to head for great Asian eateries and cheap markets.
When it comes to nightlife, the lively city center isn't short of entertainment, either. Elgin Street and Bank Street feature some of Ottawa's top bars, along with a handful of British-style pubs with their own microbrews and a bohemian vibe.
In the summer, the city hosts the Ottawa Jazz Festival, or Bluesfest, which is the largest such event in Canada and attracts top acts and jazz fans from across the world with its great atmosphere.
