Overview to Bulgaria: Travel Guide and Tourist Information

Considered a no-go destination for much of the 20th Century given its communist past and entanglement with Balkan political intricacies, Bulgaria is now becoming an ever more popular Eastern European travel destination.

Nowhere embodies Bulgaria’s all round appeal more than the capital, Sofia. The upstanding grace of the Ploshtad Sveta Nedelya (main square) and the nearby Aleksandar Nevsky Cathedral are two of the city’s most picture-perfect sights.

Away from Sofia, Veliko Turnova sits at the heart of the country on the Yantra River, ready to seduce just about all who visit. Once the country’s capital (and basically the home of an empire), its intriguing architecture and ruined castle are an impressive sight.

For a change of pace altogether, Bulgaria’s rural areas prove as attractive and varied as its cities. There’s a big seasonal thrust to tourism here, with the mountains providing great skiing during winter and the Black Sea offering seaside splendor come summer.

To the southwest of the country, Bansko offers great slopes at cheap prices during the snowy months. Once the snow melts, travelers atill explore the same region and its many small and intricate towns, making sure to stop off at the iconic Rila Monastery on the way.

Down in the lowlands, the Black Sea coast boasts two large resorts at Sunny Beach and Golden Sands, while the enclave at Varna is known for its barmy nightlife. Emerging destinations such as Sozopol and Sveti Vlas tend to be quieter, though no less stunning.

Bulgaria’s turnaround from no-go to must-go is still in its early moments, and now is clearly the time to be experiencing this varied and vibrant country. Rich in tradition yet highly open in mindset, Bulgaria beguiles the visitor with infinitely more than expected.
