Sao Paulo Nightlife: Places and Districts to Go Out in Sao Paulo

Sao Paulo at Dusk

After dark, Sao Paulo can initially seem daunting but travelers who venture out will be rewarded with a wild nightlife scene that has been compared to New York in terms of diversity and atmosphere.

The Vila Madalena is the city's main area for nightlife, about 15 minutes taxi ride from the city center. Here, busy bars and samba clubs serve up cheap drinks (including the local 'calso de cana' cocktail made from sugarcane and lime) and live music every night of the week.

Jardim Paulista also has a variety of lively haunts, although there are more than a handful of British-style pubs in this district which, whilst good fun, are not exactly authentic. Nearby in upmarket Moema, jazz bars and clubs offer a more sophisticated night out.

The business district of Itaim Bibi can also (quite surprisingly) be a good place to head for clubbing, and the music in this area is very definitely Latin American. There are a number of vibrant gay spots in the city, with one of the friendliest at Vieira da Carvalho.

For something slightly more sedate, the Teatro Abril in Bela Vista and the Theatro Municipal have a wide range of pefromances throughout the year. And, just like its restaurant scene, Sao Paulo's nightlife reveals the city's amazing diversity. Cosmpolitan and always jumping, there's something for every traveler.
