International flights arrive at Galeao International Airport, while the majority of domestic flights are received by Santos Dumont Airport. Real run a cheap and frequent bus shuttle between the two and the city center.
Coaches stop at the Rodoviaria Novo Rio, and from here an express Frescao bus will take you into the center or on to Copacabana or Ipanema within 15 minutes.
The underground service in Rio is efficient, clean and safe - if a little limited in the area it covers. From Monday to Saturday, two lines are in operation; tickets can only be purchased from stations, and buying a carnet of ten rides saves time and money.
Whatever coverage is lacked by the underground, though, is made up by cheap and efficient buses. There are several different bus companies in operation, and they all run 24 hours, with tickets bought from the driver upon boarding.
Alternatively, Rio’s taxi service is one of the best and cheapest in the world. As long as you get in a yellow cab with a blue stripe and ensure the meter is running, it can prove as good a way as any of negotiating the town’s streets and attractions.
Finally, since Rio has over 74km of paths that run through the city – mostly along the beautiful beaches – renting a bike can prove an attractive mode of transport to the energetic visitor.
