1. The Old Bridge, Mostar
After being blown up by Croatian Council of Defense units during the lengthy Balkan war, Stari Most was rebuilt as an exact replica of the original and reopened in July 2004. The bridge's origins dates back to the 16th century and it has long been a popular rite of passage for local lads to dive into the River Neretva below.
2. Kajtaz, Mostar
Otherwise known as the 'Turkish House', this Mostar landmark is over 300 years old and home to Mustafa, a Turkish survivor of the Second World War and the recent conflict in Bosnia. A highlight of the city's Muslim Quarter, the owner regales gathering crowds with tales of the Ottoman Empire and the 1990s war.
3. The Apparitions of Medjugorje
Six residents of this tiny village have reported visions of the Virgin Mary since June 1981 and pilgrims now flock to the local shrine. Medjugorje is one of the most popular Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world, with around 20 million people having visited the so-called 'Apparition Hill' since the first sighting of the Madonna.
4. Bjelasnica Mountain, Sarajevo
One of the primary sites for the 1984 Winter Olympics, this 2,607-meter peak is only 20 minutes away from Sarajevo and offers superb opportunities for skiing, hiking or mountain biking.
5. Sarajevo War Tunnel
For three years, Sarajevo was besieged by the Yugoslav People's Army and Bosnian Serb forces in opposition to Bosnia-Herzegovina's independence. Once 800 meters long, the Sarajevo tunnel was dug by volunteers working in eight hour shifts to create a link between the enclosed city and the UN safe zone at the airport. Around 20 meters of the tunnel that saved Sarajevo are still accessible.
