Things to Do in Sarajevo

Want to know some of the standout things to do in Sarajevo? Then have a look through our handpicked suggestions below...

1. Ottoman Opulence at the Gazi Husrev-Bey

One of a series of mosques in Sarajevo, this fine Islamic complex is one of the most important Ottoman sites in the Balkans. Built in the first half of the 16th century, it boasts a stunning dome and a 45 meter minaret, as well as a couple of highly decorative tombs.

2. The Sarajevo Tunnel

It took six months to dig the 800 meter tunnel used by Bosnian Muslims to smuggle supplies and weapons under the airport during the siege of Sarajevo. These days – while there are only 20-odd meters remaining – the Tunnel Museum is a vital monument to a people’s struggle against genocide.

3. Umjetnicka Akademija (Fine Arts Academy)

Sarajevo’s Fine Arts Academy sits handsomely astride the Miljacka River. Quite apart from being one of the more attractive buildings in the city, it’s also home to an impressive collection.

4. Drink the Water of Certain Return!

Legend has it that if you drink from the fountain of the Gazi Husref-Bey Mosque, you will one day return to the city. Frankly, when you’re talking about a city as appealing as Sarajevo, it’s worth a shot!

5. Buy! Buy! Buy! at Bascarsija Market

Right in the heart of Bascarsija, Sarajevo’s bustling Old Town there’s a fantastic, Turkish-style market. The narrow alleyways are lined with stalls selling artisans’ wares and handicrafts, jewelry and clothing, in what is a real highlight of the city.
