Getting Around La Paz: Transport Tips and Advice

The La Paz Railway

International flights to La Paz arrive at the El Alto International Airport, which is about 11km from the city center. Internal flights, on the other hand, arrive at the military airport which is closer to town but only connected by taxi.

El Alto is linked to the city center via cheap taxis or even cheaper (and acceptably regular) shuttle buses. The majority of buses arrive at Terminal Terrestre, which is only a short walk from Plaza San Francisco and El Prado.

La Paz itself is easy to negotiate on foot, although it’s important to remember your limits with the air being so thin. There’s an extensive network of public buses and micro-buses on hand when help is needed and the routes are numerous, although they can be a little crowded.

Taxis are also plentiful and inexpensive. Beware that they tend to charge a bit more for the long uphill sections, though – of which there are many!
