Tucked in alongside Mexico, Belize is a small country in comparison to its neighbor, and tiny by American standards. But with its stunning 'cayes' (islands), magnificent Mayan ruins, dense jungles and soaring mountain peaks, Belize is as beautiful as it is varied.
The capital, Belize City, is a pleasingly lively place with a couple of excellent museums. But Belize is very much a destination for the adventure traveler or nature enthusiast, and its often not long before the call of wild becomes too strong to resist.
Inland, the country offers plenty of ecotourism opportunities: the lush nature reserves of Cockscomb Basin (the world’s only jaguar sanctuary) and Mountain Pine Ridge are set among vast expanses of rainforest on the one hand, and pine forest on the other.
Startling Mayan temples tower over the surrounding canopies. Sites like Kuchil Balam and Caracol (whose Caana has been the country’s tallest structure for over a thousand years) provide lasting testament to the technological sophistication of this ancient culture.
The coast is arguably even more inviting; to the south, the beaches of the Placencia Peninsular are astonishing, while right the way along the world's second largest barrier reef there’s a host of diving and snorkeling sites that few other places can come close to.
Of the famous cayes that dot the country’s coastline, Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker are some of the best known where swaying palm trees and sparkling beaches mix with coral reefs, atolls and a dazzling array of marine life in an intoxicating blend.
