Want to know some of the standout things to do in Bruges? Then have a look through our handpicked suggestions below...
1. Stroll through the Streets
The real star of the show in Bruges is not anything that goes on in its grand old buildings, but the actual streets themselves. The whole of the Old Town is protected by UNESCO, and there are few more charming quarters anywhere in the world.
2. Take a Canal Trip
Ok, it’s a bit cheesy, but, as befits a place known as the ‘Venice of the North’, it really is the best way to see the city. Commercial crafts are forbidden from entering the city’s waterways, so the canals are calmness and serenity personified.
3. Have a Tilt at a Windmill
Four famous windmills are only a short stroll out from the city. One of these, the 230 year old Sint Janshuis Mill is still in working order.
4. Climb too Many Steps by Half… at the De Halve Maan Brewery
The tour of the Half Moon Brewery is fascinating (and a lot of fun, too!) But it also has some of the best views of the city. The only problem – which the ticket seller cheerfully points out on the way in – is that you have to climb 200 steps to get to it!
5. Settle in for the Night with a Beer (or two)
Having done the tour of the brewery, it’d be rude not to try out a few of their beers! Bruges’ pubs and bars are wonderfully atmospheric, and most boast a list of beers as long as your arm to choose from. Trappist, Lambic, Kriek and white beers are great. But Duvel (meaning Devil) really stands out, not least for its sheer potency!
