Things to Do in Vienna

Want to know some of the standout things to do in Vienna? Then have a look through our handpicked suggestions below...

1. Beg, Borrow or Steal a Ticket to the Opera

Even if you’re not an opera fan, the spectacular surroundings will make a trip to the State Opera House worthwhile. Tickets are not cheap, however, so make sure you book early enough to book a standing-room ticket. If you really can’t stretch to it, the guided tours are pretty affordable.

2. Lose yourself in the ’Bermuda Triangle’

The hub of Vienna nightlife hub is the area around St. Ruprecht's Church. Known as the ‘Bermuda Triangle’ because people tend to disappear there, it’ll shatter whatever preconceptions you may have about nightlife in Vienna. If you still need convincing, make for Josefstadter Strasse - another great place to party.

3. Go Down to the Plague Pit

For something a little less highbrow (and a lot more grizzly), the Catacombs underneath St Stephen’s Cathedral are full of the bones of those who succumbed to the plague in the 17th century. Not only that, but the vault, (or Gruft) is the last resting place of the remains of many of the Hapsburgs. Gruesome.

4. Make for the Museum District

It’s a measure of just how cultural Vienna is, that it doesn’t just have a couple of museums dotted around the city, it’s dedicated a separate ‘city within a city’ to them.

5. The Hundertwasserhaus

For something a little more modern, Vienna's full of striking cutting-edge architecture. And the Hundertwasserhaus is still, twenty years after its construction, one of the coolest buildings out there.
