Getting Around Vienna: Transport Tips and Advice

A Vienna Night Bus

Although Vienna’s Wien Schwechat airport is some way out of the city center, buses depart every 20 to 30 minutes, 24-hours a day and are cheap, clean and easy to use.

The public transport system in Vienna itself – as is the case throughout Austria – is excellent. Flat-fare tickets are valid on buses, trams and the underground (U-bahn) and suburban (S-bahn) trains.

Single-ride tickets, when purchased from machines on buses and trams, are also cheap. A Stunden-Netzkarte – 24-hour, all-inclusive pass – offers a value for money deal. You can look into purchasing a weekly transport pass, which may be similarly worthwhile for longer stays.

Cycling is another attractive option for getting around Vienna, especially along the Danube River. Bikes are generally free throughout the city (barring a small deposit), and there are many excellent cycle routes which are growing in number all the time.
