Things to Do in Salzburg

Want to know some of the standout things to do in Salzburg? Then have a look through our handpicked suggestions below...

1. Find the Fortress

This monolithic medieval construction sits atop a hill casting a watchful eye over Salzburg and its people. For the visitor, its interiors include a host of state rooms, two museums and a pretty frightening torture chamber.

2.Mozart Mayhem

He may not have been all that keen on the place, but Salzburg certainly doesn’t let on! The city is now Mozart-mad, having turned his birthplace and residence into two interesting and visitor-friendly museums. There’s a selection of his instruments on display, along with sheet music and, naturally, the odd rendition of his work.

3.Try a Piece of Chocolate Heaven

Because you’re on holiday! The confectioner Paul Fürst produced the first Salzburg Mozartkugel in 1890. Now known internationally, these delicious chocolate Pralines are still produced by members of his family using the ‘secret’ recipe.

4.Salzburg International Festival

Held annually between July and August, the Festival attracts performers from across the globe. Mozart features prominently, of course, but there are also contemporary premiers and theatrical performances on offer. Book early though – it’s rather popular!

5.The Hills are Alive…

…With the sound of group tours. The Sound of Music was filmed in Salzburg, and now there’s a barrage of tours offering you the complete experience. However, the frugal traveler may be best off hiring a bicycle and doing a D.I.Y. version. Bikes are cheap and there’s enough information available to make do without a professional guide.
