Want to know some of the standout things to do in Cairns? Then have a look through our handpicked suggestions below...
1. The Great Barrier Reef
It’s not really Cairns’ fault that the best things to do are actually near, rather than in, the city. Ultimately, it’s a testament to the astonishing beauty of the natural wonders on its doorstep. And there’s nothing manmade in the world that can compare with the Great Barrier Reef.
2. Port Douglas
Heading 70 km to the north of Cairns finds you at the tiny town of Port Douglas, where the wonderful Four Mile Beach offers some top-class kitesurfing. But the really great thing about Port Douglas is that it’s sandwiched between (out to sea) the magnificent Great Barrier Reef, and (inland) the Daintree National Park.
3. Take it Easy on the Cairns Foreshore Promenade
In addition to the great views out to sea from its boardwalk, the Promenade boasts a large inland bathing lagoon, and a beach area ideal for soaking up the rays.
4. Find out about Ancient Australia
Australia’s indigenous peoples – the Aborigines – are one of the very oldest communities on the planet. To find out more about their fascinating culture, art and myth, head to the Tjapukai Cultural Park.
5. Chill out at the Cascade Falls
A half hour’s journey from the city brings you to the Cascade Falls, a string of stunning natural pools and waterfalls ideal for bathing. It’s the perfect place to take a picnic and spend a day doing little other than lounging around in the water.
