Want to know some of the standout things to do in Tirana? Then have a look through our handpicked suggestions below...
1. Et’hem Bey Mosque
The Et’hem Bey Mosque, finished in 1821, is perhaps the city’s most important sight. With its intricate decoration, the inside of the dome is particularly impressive while by its side stands the Tirana’s clock tower, a popular symbol of the city.
2. Sit and Stare in Skenderberg Square
Skenderberg Square is the perfect place to feel the pulse of the city. Sitting at the heart of Tirana, it’s a large vibrant square full of all sorts of noisy life. Running away to the south, the Bulevardi Deshmoret e Kombit is an imposing reminder of the city’s Stalinist past.
3. Make for the Martyrs’ Cemetery
With fantastic views across the city, the Martyrs’ Cemetery (Vazzerat e Deshmoreve) makes a particularly evocative place for a stroll. A memorial to those who lost their lives during the Second World War, you can also pay your respects at the statue of Mother Albania that stands guard.
4. Try some Tave Kosi
Food in Albania brings together elements of Greek and Turkish cuisines. But the real standout is ‘Tabe Kosi’, a delicious dish of mutton served with yoghurt.
5. Practice Shaking your Head!
Unlike in many countries, shaking your head in Albania means ‘yes’, while nodding means ‘no’. This fundamental cultural difference has to be overcome if you want to get anywhere at all in the country!
