Whether you’re looking for acres of warm sand, action-packed watersports or sleepy fishing villages, Mediterranean beaches have got it all.

It’s easy to see why the Med still draws hoard of beach bums to its shores every year – from Spilt to Santorini, you’re guaranteed spotless sunshine, and plenty of things to do beyond your beach towel.

Some of the Med’s resorts are blighted by package tourism, with ugly high-rises blotting the landscape. But you can still have a bargain beach break without resorting to these overpriced hotels….

There are thousands of beach hostels with all the sun, sea and sand you need for the ultimate hostel holiday – many with stylish rooms and facilities that would put faceless hotel chains to shame.

Fabric Hostel, Naples, Italy

The factory looms may have gone, but in their place is a modern beach hostel with superb facilities – think bright rooms with funky furniture, a games room for table tennis, and a restaurant serving delicious Italian cuisine.

Dabble in Naples’ hectic city streets before retreating to your own slice of paradise – the chilled-out neighborhood of Portico, within easy reach of Pompeii and the rest of the Amalfi Coast.

Corfu Backpackers Inn, Corfu, Greece

Villa Klaic, Dubrovnik, Croatia

Often overlooked in favor of Italy, Greece and Spain, Croatia has some of the most scenic and secluded beaches in the Med, and is full of fascinating, historic cities to explore. Villa Klaic is a pretty guesthouse just 15 minutes from Dubrovnik’s old town and the turquoise waters of the coast.

The ideal beach retreat, there are only six rooms in this homely hostel, each with TV and private bathrooms. The friendly owners offer free maps for exploring the city, a welcome drink to kick off your stay, and a free continental breakfast on the terrace, with amazing sea views.
