Ecotourism and Eco-travel

Ecotourism may not be a particularly new concept, but, from Costa Rica to India, New Zealand to South Africa, eco-travel destinations are certainly growing in popularity. So we felt that it would be extremely worthwhile to put together a guide to ecotourism and ethical travel, highlighting some of the options available to the many budding eco-travelers, hostel-goers and backpackers who want to do their bit for the environment.

These days it seems like whichever way you turn, travelers are faced with green or ethical dilemmas, and an increasing need to learn more about responsible travel. A few of those who have adopted the eco-label in recent years have been accused of nothing more than slick marketing, ‘green-washing’ as it's become known.

Some of the information on these pages draws attention to the main areas where you might encounter difficulties. Aware of the increasing need for us all to place more of an emphasis on eco-travel, HostelBookers is committed to putting together a collection of tips and articles regarding the ways in which we can all make the most of our travels with a clean conscience.

By following some of the simple guidelines in this section, we feel that if we all really put our minds to it, we can all help create a code of sustainable travel, protect our favorite spots for future generations to enjoy, and, ultimately, improve the lot of those who live there by giving a little back to the countries to which we travel.
